The tech giant confirmed this week that its threat notification system, which alerts users when state-sponsored attackers may be targeting their devices, is very real and should be taken seriously. How Apple's Spyware Detection Works
Apple's system identifies patterns consistent with mercenary spyware, the kind governments and private firms pay millions for. Think Pegasus from NSO Group. These aren't your average phishing attempts. This is high-level surveillance tech designed to read your messages, track your location, and access your camera without any indication.
When Apple detects these patterns tied to your Apple ID, you'll get a notification at the top of your appleid.apple.com page, plus an email and iMessage to the addresses and numbers on file.
Who Gets Targeted
The notifications typically go to journalists, activists, politicians, and diplomats. But Apple noted that anyone could be at risk depending on their profile. The company won't share specifics about how it detects attacks because that would tip off the spyware operators.

Apple recommends immediately updating to the latest iOS, enabling Lockdown Mode, and contacting a digital security expert. The company also suggests reaching out to the Access Now Digital Security Helpline, which provides emergency assistance to people facing these threats.
