Cameron Diaz "Married Couples Having ‘Separate Bedrooms, Houses’

Cameron Diaz sparked a conversation about modern marriage after saying that married couples having separate bedrooms and even separate houses should be normalized. The 51 year old actress, who has been married to Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden since 2015, shared her unconventional views during an appearance on Molly Sims and Emese Gormley's "Lipstick on the Rim" podcast.

Cameron Diaz Says Separate Bedrooms Should Be Normalized

The conversation started when the podcast hosts discussed the challenges of sharing a bed with a partner who snores. Diaz took the topic a step further with a bold declaration.

"We should normalize separate bedrooms. To me, I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I'm doing fairly well."

The Holiday actress went even further, describing an ideal setup where couples have a shared bedroom in the middle for intimate moments while maintaining their own personal spaces for rest and alone time.

"And we have the bedroom in the middle that we can gather in for our intimate moments."

Cameron Diaz Clarified Her Comments About Her Husband

Diaz was quick to clarify that her comments were not a reflection of any issues in her marriage to Madden. She acknowledged that her views on separate living had evolved since meeting her husband.

"I've already mentioned it. Just to be clear, because my husband is genuinely remarkable, my feelings have changed. That's what I said before I got married."

The What Happens in Vegas actress has openly expressed her admiration for Madden on multiple occasions, despite choosing to live a more private life following her break from acting. In a 2016 interview with Harper's Bazaar, Diaz reflected on how marriage transformed her life.

"Marriage was a significant milestone in my life during my 40s, and it brought about new and transformative experiences. It's really amazing. I never saw myself doing it, and if I hadn't met my husband, I'm not sure if I would have either. That caught me off guard."

The Separate Bedrooms Debate Went Viral

Diaz's comments immediately went viral, sparking a heated debate online about the dynamics of modern relationships. Some fans praised her honesty, arguing that having personal space is healthy for any relationship. Others questioned whether sleeping apart signals deeper issues in a marriage. Relationship experts have noted that "sleep divorce," the practice of couples sleeping in separate rooms, has been on the rise in recent years, with studies suggesting it can actually improve both sleep quality and relationship satisfaction.

Cameron and Benji tied the knot in January 2015 and have largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight. They welcomed their daughter Raddix in January 2020 via surrogate. Regardless of where they sleep, the couple appears to be going strong after nearly a decade of marriage.

The trend reflects the broader cultural shift toward self expression, authenticity, and the blurring of traditional boundaries in fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. As consumers become more informed and more intentional about their choices, the brands and individuals who lead these conversations will continue to shape the direction of the industry. The conversation is far from over, and the next evolution is already taking shape.
