Javits Frimpong, 15, Shot and Killed Walking to School in the Bronx

A Bronx family is grieving a son who was only walking to school. Javits Frimpong, 15, was shot once in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 on Thursday morning near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont section of the Bronx, while walking to Dreamyard Preparatory Academy.
Javits was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he died. Police say three teenagers, believed to be about 16 to 18 years old and wearing black clothing and blue surgical masks, ran from the scene toward Crotona Park.

No arrests have been made and police have not confirmed a motive. Javits moved from Ghana about a year ago to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Javits was doing something thousands of students do every school morning. He was on his way to class, moving through his own neighborhood on a regular Thursday, when his life was cut short. That is the detail that has stayed with so many people reading this story. A walk to school is supposed to be ordinary. It is supposed to end with a classroom door, a first period bell, and a normal day. For one Bronx family, it ended with a hospital visit and a loss that cannot be undone. His father, Thomas Frimpong, had welcomed his son into his home about a year ago after Javits moved from Ghana. The two were building a life together in New York, and now that life has been changed in a way no parent should ever have to face.
Police have not made an arrest, and they have not named a motive. That leaves a family and a neighborhood waiting for answers. In the early stages of a case like this, detectives work through what they can piece together from the scene itself, from cameras in the area, and from anyone who was nearby that morning. They ask people to come forward even with a small detail, because a small detail can matter more than it first seems. A person who saw three teenagers running toward Crotona Park, or who noticed something out of place on East 171st Street, could hold a piece of the picture. Police have described the three teenagers as wearing black clothing and blue surgical masks. Anyone with information is being asked to contact police and share what they know.

 A Community Left Grieving

When a student does not make it to school, the absence is felt far beyond one classroom. Teachers notice an empty seat. Classmates notice a friend who is missing. Families in the neighborhood start their own mornings differently, holding their children a little closer on the walk to school. Dreamyard Preparatory Academy is a school, but it is also a community, and a loss like this reaches every part of it. There is no simple way to make sense of a morning that began like any other and ended in grief. What remains is the memory of a young man who had recently made a new home in New York, and whose family is now asking for answers. The Talk Lounge will continue to follow this story and share updates as police release more information.
